Research and data

Building understanding of modern slavery in Australia.

Research and data help us understand modern slavery in Australia and to respond to these crimes.
Australia is:

  • improving data collection and information sharing between government agencies, business, communities and other organisations
  • conducting research on modern slavery, including through government-funded projects by academics and civil society
  • advancing and promoting collaboration on modern slavery research.

Australian Institute of Criminology

The Australian Institute of Criminology is Australia's national research and knowledge centre on crime and justice. Find out more about the Australian Institute of Criminology's research on human trafficking and other forms of modern slavery.

Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery Research Network

The Australian Institute of Criminology established the Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery Research Network in 2022 to promote and share research about human trafficking and other forms of modern slavery in Australia. It lists research projects in a searchable database.

Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery National Minimum Dataset

The Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery National Minimum Dataset is an administrative dataset on the nature and outcomes of modern slavery reports in Australia, and the characteristics of suspected victim‑survivors and perpetrators.

Currently in pilot form, the Dataset draws together data from Australian Government agencies responsible for responding to modern slavery in Australia, including the Australian Federal Police, the Department of Social Services, the Department of Home Affairs, and the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions. Other government agencies and civil society organisations with relevant data will be engaged to provide information to the Dataset as it is developed.

Findings of the pilot data collection, conducted from 1 July to 31 December 2022, are reported on the Australian Institute of Criminology’s website.

Modern Slavery Statements Register

Australia's Modern Slavery Act requires certain large businesses and other entities to provide annual statements describing what they are doing to identify and address modern slavery risks in their global operations and supply chains.

These statements are published on the Modern Slavery Statements Register. They provide valuable information and data on modern slavery risks in the supply chains of Australia’s goods and services.
